What Conditions Can Lasers and Lights Treat?
Find a Solution for Redness, Wrinkles, Lesions, and More in Denver
AboutSkin Dermatology has been at the forefront of laser technology in the Rocky Mountain region for almost two decades. Dr. Joel Cohen has performed clinical trials on innovative laser technology (including as lead author of a hybrid fractional laser trial that led to HALO®). Dr. Cohen has also performed other key laser clinical trials (including thulium laser and laser resurfacing), and he has lectured regularly on these protocols both in the United States and around the world (Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, South America).
Lasers and light devices are essential tools for any modern practice offering medical or cosmetic dermatology. At AboutSkin Dermatology, we have more than 30 devices and use the precise tool for the job (or a combination of lasers) for Denver-area women and men seeking treatment for any number of skin conditions, from etched-lines and wrinkles to acne scars and recent surgical scars to blood vessels and rosacea to sun damage and benign pigmented lesions.
Our Board-Certified Dermatologist Physicians are well trained in identifying the most appropriate laser or light treatment for your particular need. We own the most comprehensive array of lasers in this region of the country. Our exclusive laser portfolio is on site, not rented for different days of the month (as at many other practices). With so many lasers available, we customize a great treatment plan based on safety, efficacy, and desired downtime. We aim to maximize results while minimizing unwanted side effects. We are committed to offering the most up-to-date lasers and energy-based devices that have proven efficacy and safety—and, in some cases, we participate in the clinical trials that lead to these treatment algorithms.
What Do Light Devices and Lasers Do?
Laser procedures work by focusing their respective wavelengths to a specific target in the skin (vessels, brown sun-damage spots, wrinkles, and scars). Each skin condition responds best to a particular type of laser or light device.
Which Conditions Can Be Addressed by Lasers and Lights?
Brown Lesions (Like Sun Spots)
Dark patches on the skin can stand out, drawing unwanted attention. Lentigos (sun spots), melasma (facial hyperpigmentation), and seborrheic keratoses (brown, waxy growths) all respond well to certain laser wavelengths and energy-based treatments, such as laser resurfacing (erbium, CO2, HALO®, thulium) and/or more focal treatment (q-switched laser, BBL, or IPL).
Red Lesions (Like Facial Vessels)
There are many conditions that can cause facial redness, either throughout the face or neck, or in concentrated areas. Common skin conditions treated with light or laser energy include broken blood vessels, hemangiomas (blood vessel growths), port-wine stains (dense blood vessel birthmarks), poikiloderma (sun-damage changes on neck and chest), rosacea (a chronic skin condition that causes redness and vessel prominence, especially on the nose/cheeks/chin), and cherry angiomas. Depending on the cause of the redness, pulse dye laser (PDL), long-pulse Nd:YAG laser, BBL, IPL, MaxG, or a fractional laser treatment (like 1540, 1470, or HALO®) may be recommended.
Wrinkles
With sun exposure and repeated mechanical action, wrinkles form over time. Wrinkles are a universal sign of aging and form as the skin loses structural support (collagen, hyaluronic acid, elastin, and other important elements) due to intrinsic and extrinsic aging factors. Wrinkles can appear on the face, chest, neck, and elsewhere—taking the form of lip lines, crepey eyelid skin, and more. AboutSkin Dermatology’s resurfacing lasers (erbium, CO2, ablative fractional) can smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, while bipolar fractional radiofrequency (Genius® RF) or micro-focused ultrasound (Ultherapy®) can address certain types of laxity. At AboutSkin’s clinical trial division, AboutSkin Research, we have participated in clinical trials on many lasers, radiofrequency devices, several micro-focused ultrasound devices,
and new fractional resection technology.
Other Skin Conditions
Laser and light treatments can also be used to treat texture irregularities, minimize large facial pores, and improve rough sun-damaged and prematurely aged skin. Lasers and light-based treatments can help treat acne (photodynamic therapy with red and/or blue light) and acne scars, raised scars (including keloids), precancerous lesions (known as AKs or actinic keratoses), and unwanted tattoos or facial/body hair (laser hair removal).
Choosing the Right Treatment for You
It is important that you first meet with one of our Board-Certified Dermatologist Physicians to come up with a plan that works best for your particular concerns. Multiple treatments, and sometimes combinations of lasers and energy-based devices, may be necessary to maximize your results—and we have the experience and technology to do just that.
Aside from lasers, there are also other skin rejuvenation options. Our providers regularly perform chemical peels for melasma and acne, dermal-infusion microdermabrasion for smoothness and acne, and microneedling for collagen induction and scars.
Whether you want to rejuvenate your skin, address sun damage, or reduce hair in a specific area, AboutSkin Dermatology is well equipped with the techniques, tools, and skill to produce the results you are looking for and deserve.
