What Is Microneedling?

A microneedling device uses tiny needles to stimulate collagen production by creating numerous shallow wounds in the skin. Damaged skin sends signals to grow and repair, which results in increased production of collagen. Because collagen is important for strong, smooth, and flexible skin, as the body creates more of the protein as part of the healing process, the overall look of the skin in the treatment area improves.

What Is Plasma?

This is a treatment created by harvesting a patient’s blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets from the red blood cells. Plasma is the fluid in which the platelets and red blood cells are suspended. After removing the red blood cells, a high concentration of platelets and growth factors are left behind in the plasma. This plasma has a very high concentration of the body’s own ingredients to stimulate growth and cellular repair. Plasma has been used in many areas of medicine to help with the growth and healing process (for example, Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal have been treated with plasma for tendon injuries), and this cutting-edge procedure is now being used by dermatologists to address skin concerns.

What Areas Can Microneedling and Plasma Treat?

Microneedling and plasma are used for skin rejuvenation on the face, neck, and chest and can be combined into one treatment for even more dramatic results. By using two methods to increase collagen production in the skin, the treatments can improve texture, address mild laxity, and provide other benefits.

Can Plasma Help with Hair Loss?

Millions of men and women find over time that their hair begins to thin in a predictable way. This pattern loss is genetic and not due to specific environmental factors. The problem is due to hair follicles “shutting down” and failing to produce new hairs as they should.

Applying the high concentration of growth factors and platelets present in plasma to the areas around the hair follicles can “wake up” ailing follicles, encouraging hair growth in areas where a hairline is receding, a part is widening, or a bald patch is growing. Note that this approach is effective on patients who are losing their hair, not those who have already gone bald.

What Other Rejuvenating Treatments Are Available?

Microneedling may also be paired with radiofrequency energy for improved collagen-induction results, as with Genius® RF. In addition to penetrating the skin, this device’s needles deliver RF energy below the surface.
